The fort stands on the bank of the River Chitral, among the mounts of “Himdukush” in Chitral city. This marvelous fort was built by King Nadir Shah in the fourteenth century. The outer walls are two and a half centuries aged, yet the fort itself is a hundred years old.
The fort was formerly used as a barracks of Chitral soldiers. In 1969 when the state of Chitral was integrated into Pakistan, the ownership of the fort was granted to the royal family.
Inside the castle, you can find a Royal Palace, residential compartments, guest houses, and a Mosque. The central attraction for the tourists is the marble arbor that you can’t resist admiring.
Precious commemoratives of the ancient age are preserved finally there, which include the portraits of the royal family of Chitral.
The best part of the place is the excellent view of the highest peak of Hindukush, “Turk Mir”. The fort has been now handed over to Nasirul-Mulk, who renovated the place after the deadly damages of the earth quack in 2005. A special permit for commoners is required to visit the fort.
